A lot of people have been talking
about Mozy lately and this seems
to be one startup in the online backup space that seems to have
even the biggest companies a little bit worried. Mozy's first
innovation is free remote backup - that is right, absolutely
free backup for up to 2GB. If you don't have many important
files or pictures 2GB may be plenty.
OK, so 2GB isn't all that much
storage space, but their paid options are cheap, also. For 30GB
of space (pretty much the sweet-spot for remote backup) they
charge $4.95/month.
Scheduling backups with Mozy
couldn't be easier and everything seems pretty intuitive. They
even have an option that allows you to schedule backups for
whenever your computer is idle - this keeps Mozy from getting in
your way but gets your data backed up as quickly as possible.
One common complaint that we have
heard about Mozy is the monthly email free users receive in
exchange for the service - the emails are a little quirky, but
it seems like a small price to pay. If we have any real concerns
about Mozy they are the lack of a Mac client and how difficult
the restore process can be.
Note: We just learned from a
marketing rep. at Mozy that they updated the application to
streamline the restore process. It seems a lot better now.
